Art as Medicine/Medicine as Art

Eric Avery, M.D.     Video: Roger Haile

On November 30 and December 1, 1997, the Fogg Art Museum commemorated World AIDS Day with my art action,
Art as Medicine/Medicine Art. We honored the health care of HIV patients and educated viewers about HIV/AIDS
by displaying in the Strauss Gallery the multidisciplinary care provided by Cambridge Hospital's Zinberg Clinic.
The action, curated by Jerry was held in conjunction with the exhibition Rome and New York: A Continuity of Cities,
a product of a Harvard graduate seminar, "Prints in Use". Many of the prints in the exhibit had an explicitly not-fine-art
function (maps, advertising circulars). For my print action, this clinical art space was built in the Strauss Gallery.
